In case anyone wants to take this further, I'll note that the downloaded 
sample plays, with its 'interactive' OSD, on my non-Pi box if I simply 
overwrite the .ts file of a normal TV recording; in my earlier test I 
overwrote another DVB-T radio file, but they are less widely available.
