Peter:  I thought the error described was a pretty good match to my 
original experience.  My system (recent master) works for me with Qt 
after my switch to xv-blit and regrettably I haven't given your patch in 
master a comprehensive test.   But I haven't noticed a commit to 
'fixes', which Chris is using...  ?
