Are you sure your STB cannot accept commands over the wire?  I have an
HD-PVR and I control my Comcast Motorola STB using a firewire cable and the
6200ch script. https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/6200ch

It works very well, so I've never had to struggle with an IR blaster.
