Interpackage relations are complicated. Most distributions state a
factual relations on installation and leave it to the user to maintain
it afterwards. This has the advantage of an easy first installation,
but lays more expectation on the user afterwards and often fails
there. Maintaining is not easy!
Gentoo has from the start chosen a different path, not an annual pre
defined state, but a keeping of interdependencies and supporting the
user on intermediate changes.
Installing is much more work, maintaining as all inter package
dependencies are recorded, is if you want to deviate from the default
path a few hundred percent easier. Removing a package is simply a
one-button action. Downgrading the same.
If you want a simple to use no worry system, choose otherwise. If you
want a system to apply to your wishes and that changes to your wishes,
go for Gentoo. After your first investment on knowing what is
happening down in the engine, any change is easy!
