I've gone ahead and implemented your suggestion of using the --noreplace
switch, Hika, which seems to have resolved the immediate problem of the
system wanting to unmerge php 5.6.30. I remain a bit confused about the
world set, what should/shouldn't be there, and how to clean it up if I've
not been using the --oneshot/-1 switch very much. But I'll be turning to
the gentoo forums to seek clarifications on that.

Should I be understanding from this assertion that php 7 should not be
expected to work with 0.27 under gentoo, but only to be compatible with
0.28? Or with the new WebFrontend or some such?
