Thanks for the response.  Some good points there, but I had already cleaned
out the apache server configs and verified mysql was working correctly.

I finally got it working again.  I'm not sure exactly what the issue was,
but I progressively removed and re-installed more and more packages and
eventually after fixing some apache issues in the re-installed packages by
hand, it began working again.  I removed mythweb, apache, and php and
cleaned out any related files.

So, for anyone running into this in the future (judging from all the
questions posed in various forums, this seems to be a recurring problem
with every version upgrade) - my advice is to purge everything related to
mythweb, re-install it.
