[mythtv-users] OS update after fresh Mythbuntu 16.04 install hoses XFCE desktop

I did a fresh install of Mythbuntu 16.04 with Nvidia drivers (card is
GeForce 8400 GE). This went fine and it booted up with the XFCE desktop.

 The software center said there was an OS update. I installed it and
rebooted and now instead of the XFCE desktop I have an X interface (I
guess), the icons, etc., are are broken, and mythtv setup launches
automatically, in a window instead of full screen.

I remember this being an issue last time I installed Mythbuntu 12.04 a long
time ago, but I can't remember the fix. Something having to do with
invoking VDPAU in grub, but I'm not even sure if this would apply 4 OS
versions later.

I guess I could just reinstall and not do the update but I have the feeling
this will cause problems with upgrades later on.  Can anyone tell me how to
get the desktop back?
