I've been using an HDPVR bought off eBay for 3-4 years now with no 
problems with the device itself, just the power supply.

The HDPVR2 uses a different chipset and, AFAIK, nobody has written the 
integration with Linux.

The other method some folks have used is a generic IPTV-based encoder:

However, the biggest drawback with this approach for me is that (so far) 
the audio is limited to 2-channel. Nobody has released an IPTV capture 
device capable of better audio capture. Furthermore, depending on your 
source material and the IPTV device used, you may have problems with 
HDCP using this approach.
