2nd on the ratpoison, though I use an auto-login shell (mingetty,
lauched via systemd /w restart) for my frontends (as they are dedicated
front-ends, not used as desktops - ever.). I know with this setup, I
don't technically need a WM, but it does help with some of the
keyboard/focus issues I've had in the past... but can't get much more
light weight then ratpoison.

Have you looked at nodm?
I'm having the opposite problem on a pi, minimal desktop system that I have and will be getting rid of it this evening, but it seems to do exactly what you want.
