+1

I suck at (probably because I hate) having to remember or even be
bothered to go "some place" to see if something is new. You take the
time to do it and nothing is new. You do that again, and again and
pretty soon you just grow tired of "polling" for something new, just in
case there is something new and give up.

With e-mail, when there is something new, I get a (maskable) interrupt
telling me there is something new and that I won't be wasting my time
going to that "some place" where I have gone so many times only to find
nothing "new".

With e-mail, all the things are in one place, not scattered throughout
dozens of different places with different interfaces and...

different account credentials.

Indeed.

And signal to noise ratio. Forums really suck at that. In an effort
to make things all "pretty", the amount of space and decoration around
the content is high, reducing the amount of signal you get.

Reading forums also takes a lot of round-trips over the Internet,
slowing down the experience just due to the regular latency of having
to go fetch each message (in real time) along with all the pretty page
drawing garbage that is needed to display the message.
