afaik linux is same as windows; just because SMB allows it, doesnt mean the file system allows it and vice versa. Also afaik mythtv itself is unaware of SMB so assuming your content is local, then try disabling the smb service.
while it's personal preference and nothing wrong with hika's reply, i prefer the octect style permissions; go with 'chmod 660 /path/to/videos' user&group will get RW, others will be no access.
whats your  'ls -l' output say on that folders permissions?

could try stopping the smb service on your BE; something along the lines of 'systemctl stop smb' should probably do it, but it is distro specific.
