OK...the trace1 level seems to work:
lircd --nodaemon --loglevel=trace1 --logfile=/root/lirc.log
--device=/dev/lirc0 --driver=default /etc/lirc/lircd.conf

Which the attached log. The irw attempts are towards the end.
