Not sure about the X.org way, but there's a way to force it in the kernel.
You can do it on the kernel command line as demonstrated here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/kernel_mode_setting#Forcing_modes_and_EDID
I think you can also build it in to the kernel statically.
