What I do is keep a "reference" copy of recordings-ui.xml and make my changes 
there. When I do an update I diff the new one with my copy. So far the only 
differences are my additions, and I just cat my reference into the overwritten 
file. There's only 1 file so it's a simple hack.

I do the same with MythWeb's canned_searches.php.
