I'm a retired engineer and of course, one of the first rules that you
learn is to change one thing at a time and document the results.
Well I broke that rule because the backend box is a little hard for me
to get to.
I did
"A solution to the SQL Fatal Error mentioned above is a tweak to the
/etc/mysql/conf.d/mythtv.cnf file. Add "sql_mode=NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION"
(without the quotation marks) to the end of the
/etc/mysql/conf.d/mythtv.cnf file. I believe the error was caused by an
incompatibility between mysql 5.7 and databases from older versions of
mysql."

followed by a apt-get update + upgrade.
The error is gone and the backend appears to be up and running ( big
major "YES" ).
This is my first real .28 venture and tomorrow I should be able to test
it with my RP3 also.
If both are up and running I will really be happy.
  Thanks to all,
   Bert
