I always start with a new partition, new install of the operating system
and MythTV, then restore the database. Run mythtv-setup to upgrade the
database.

One thing to watch out for - if the user id and group id for mythtv are
changed, the recordings may have the wrong ownership. You can get around
this by manually creating the mythtv user and group with the same
numbers as before, before installing MythTV. Alternatively you can use
chown after the new install to fix the ownership of recordings and
recording directories, before starting up MythTV.
