I just had it happen to me too. I use VDPAU on an Nvidia 220 card
with Mythbuntu 16.04. I allowed the crash reporter to file a bug
report about it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+bug/1639215
I have now reverted to the previous Nvidia version, which is
nvidia-304.131 in my case, and mythfrontend is starting up properly
again.
If you want to try that, you can do it from the command line with
apt-get (search for web pages explaining how), or more easily, use the
Synaptic package manager. Install Synaptic if necessary: apt-get
install synaptic. Then in Synaptic, do a Quick Search for nvidia,
find the package for your Nvidia drivers in the list and click on it,
then click on Package > Force version and select the previous version.
Then Apply. Once the older version has been installed, go to Package
> Lock version to prevent any later versions from being reinstalled by
automatic updates. Then reboot to activate the new (old) Nvidia
version.
See here for more on forcing a package version:

So it looks like the Nvidia-340.132 drivers have a bug, or are doing
something new that is exposing a mythfrontend problem.
