And I am also guessing that Comcast wants a (much) cheaper
X1 box for between now and their pure streaming box.  Rumor
suggests that they effectively cornered the market for a certain
transcoder chip in order to support their in-home playback
devices with their X1 box (which needed to transcode almost
all content to H.264 for playback to the other devices and apps
in the household), and being able to either eliminate (long term)
or use the reduced stream capability variant of that chip
(i.e. reduced price) is likely attractive too.
