I don't know the answer to the question as posed, but let me explain why
I use the XMLTV grabber.

I'm in Belgium, and as you can imagine I get channels from lots of
neighbouring countries (as well as countries further afield), so that
there is no single place where I can obtain all of my guide data. So I
have to use several grabbers.

I do that from a script that is run from a nightly cron job. I then use
mythfilldatabase with the --file and --xmlfile arguments to load the
grabbed data into the database.

So to return to the question: I suspect that the regular
mythfilldatabase approach (presumably including the mfdb-json grabber)
would work fine if you have a one-stop shop for all of your guide data.
But I've never tried (or been able to because of the above reasons).
