If you can not get this to work through xorg.conf, you can also try
forcing the port on with kernel/module parameters:

modeset=1 video=HDMI-0:e

e stands for enable and d for disable. Depending on the driver it can
be HDMI-1. This way you can also set your console resolution,
color-depth and refresh-rate:

video=HDMI-0:1280x960-32 at 60
