Subject: [mythtv-users] OT: A major difference between Widows and Linux

<snip>

Windows never needed the terminal for problem solving! I seem to remember
that we had to 'load' Windows 3.1 from DOS, but ever since Windows 95, the
problems (of which there have been many!!) have always had a solution that
was still within a GUI.

Times are a changin' as they say - particularly on the server side of
things.

The default install for server 2016, and indeed MS recommendation is for
core, which does NOT have a GUI installed, and is administered from the
command line. There is also an option for the Nano install, which doesn't
even have a command line - it's all administered remotely from powershell
cmdlets - both have remote GUI access. The only time Microsoft recommend
installing the GUI on a server now, is when you need to have the 'User
Experience' on it - like when it's a terminal server. It's all down to
reducing the attack surface area.

Desktops on the other hand are still GUI devices, but with Windows 10,
there's pretty much nothing you can't do (admin wise) from the command line
via powershell (though there are several frustrations with it as I work
through a full deployment).
