After lots of experimenting, I sometimes find that I need to re-install
Raspbian Jessie from scratch in order to reset to a known state.
I just did this today because I had a problem with overscan when I was
using what should have been the correct resolution. A re-install and
then applying the appropriate configuration changes worked like a charm.
Now I am up and running again with no overscan.
You might wish to try a re-install.
