Do you need to stick with USB, or can you use a "card" ?

For cards, I've been using the early Hauppage HVR devices - IIRC I've two off HVR-1350 PCIe cards and they've been rock solid. Not too sensitive in terms of signal, but as long as there's enough for them, rock solid. Before that, I had (IIRC) an HVR-1250 PCI card, similarly rock solid.
As they are a common and well known card, I'd be surprised if support for them had been dropped in later kernels.
