Well, the package manager thinks VDPAU is there, lets see if the file 
system agrees. Either under root or using sudo

updatedb (Updates the locate database)
locate libvdpau.so.1

If the updatedb command fails, then you can install it by doing an 
apt-get install mlocate

Mine shows up in:

locate libvdpau.so.1

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvdpau.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvdpau.so.1.0.0
