This is a consequence of 'upgrading' by reinstalling the OS without nuking all the partitions.

System users such as ntp (and many other) are allocated arbitrary uid and gid values less than 1000;
many of these get 'home' directories in /var.

A reinstallation may re-use these values for different subsystems causing endless confusion.

My solution to this is, on initial installation onto clean disks, to (i) install the OS, (ii) create
the mythtv user as a normal user, possibly selecting your own uid / gid values to ensure consistency
across your network and (iii) only then install mysql and mythtv.

This also gives you the opportunity to place the home directory under /home rather than /var where
an automatic installation might place it. Subsequent upgrades will be much easier!
