I stuck an SSD in my backend a while ago, and I just have it as a standalone drive. It replaced raid1 arrays.
As for backups, the solution I use at work is to use rsync to copy everything to a drive on a backup machine, and then use StoreBackup to keep multiple restore points efficiently. At home, well since you mention it, that reminds me* ...
* Actually I do have a backup made with Retrospect, but it doesn't get done as often as I should.
