hm... looking at another thread it looks like a correctly loaded 
lirc_rpi module should create /dev/lirc0 (and thus /sys/class/rc/rc0). 
If not, perhaps dmesg has a clue? lirc_rpi has a debug option which can 
be turned on in /etc/modules or /etc/modprobe.d
