In recent years (I have found) the imonlcd driver does not auto
detect/set the right protocol for the VFD.
I use /etc/modules.d/*.conf option for the imonlcd protocol.
No udev rule here & device lcd(n) seems consistent.
IIRC the imon & imonlcd driver are loaded.

The best improvement in functionality was using an upstart job to
control LCDd. Previous, the init system left the display filled with
stale information half the shutdowns. (The built-in standby clock has
never worked with linux)
I don't use the IR input device.
