Please do not top post.
That was my first solution. Then I incorporated suspend, shutdown etc.
in my python lirc service for playing analog radio. You can just only
use it to catch the suspend button on your remote.

The nice thing is you can also use it to suspend or shutdown a machine
from another machine (without the console locking up) by dropping
through ssh the command into the listing pipe:
ssh pc-myth "echo suspend > /tmp/mythtv-fiforadio"
for my main frontend.
