Gag, cough, bleeech! I forgot about the blob that has consumed the Linux
world. I had finally absorbed enough documentation to be comfortable (and
even appreciate) upstart and now I have to rework all my /etc/init code
along with everything else systemd has "assimilated" (e.g. udev, cron, acpi
wake-ups, ...). I won't be surprised to learn it even means I'll have to
reinvent my anachron scripts, too.

Sigh. Back to building updated systems independently and from scratch. As
much as I dislike Windoze, at least I was always able to upgrade the system
in place and get back to using it instead of having it upset the whole
apple cart each time.
