Since neither the NAS nor mythtv backend require large powerful computers, I thought about running NAS4free as a virtual machine under the same Ubuntu system that is running mythtv. Or I could use the virtualbox option on NAS4free to run mythbuntu as a virtual machine.

Unless you are using only network tuners, you will not be able to run
MythTV under VirtualBox. It is possible to use USB passthrough now in
VirtualBox, so you might be able to get USB tuners to work also. But
normal tuner hardware will not be accessible.

The hardware would be fine for running MythTV, and it is likely that
the only problem with running a virtual machine as well would be how
much RAM you needed to devote to the virtual machine. I have no idea
how much RAM NAS4free might need. If the MythTV setup does not get
too busy (eg recording six things at once and doing commercial skip
processing on them at the same time), then it is not unlikely that the
box would be fine for running a virtual machine as well.
