I have migrated my backend to 16.04 recently (fresh 0.28 install with 
restore of a 0.27 database, comming from Ubuntu 14.04) and switched to 
MariaDB instead of MySQL.

I also did a fresh install of the main frontend and when you install the 
myth-stuff, it pulls the "normal" mysql-client. This works good with the 
MariaDB server on the backend.

On another frontend, still running Ubuntu 14.04, I upgraded MythTV in 
place and it works fine to.

I swiched to MariaDB because it was advised by the editor of another 
software we use at my employer.

I had some trouble to install it on 16.04 (as I had with the standard 
MySQL-Server), so I followed this tutorial:
