Nobody said you can't do the restore. Not sure where you got that from.

Don't copy database files drectly, as changes in the mysql/mariadb version
could cause issues. Always use the myth-supplied backup and restore
programs.

1. Backup your database on the existing system, save the file somewhere safe
2. Reinstall your system
3. Restore your database using the options specified in an earlier email to
drop and recreate the database from scratch
4. Run mythtv-setup to upgrade the database to the current version
5. Run mythfrontend to upgrade other bits of the database (plugins etc)
6. Sit back and enjoy :-)
