I don't know about the recording time, but the skipping problem is
probably caused by bad seektables. As I understand that could come
from a variable frame-rate.

You can rebuild them with:
mythcommflag --rebuild
See: mythcommflag --help for the syntax

I previously had a structural problem with my PVR500 cards and had set
up a script to do it automatically after recording and before
commflagging. I placed it in place of the commflagging job.
