I was also experiencing out of sync audio.

Not likely (as you will see below)...

Mine is Nvidia using VDPAU. So completely different hardware and
drivers but similar symptoms.
I honestly suspect some bug has crept into the player or I/O pipeline
since 0.27. I have been meaning to go bug report it but I'm skeptical
that anything will come of it. When I do eventually get to reporting
it, I sincerely hope I am wrong about that.

I have one. One that has made this a complete non-issue for me, hence
my dragging my feet on bug reporting...

That's similar to my idea. My idea is to start using Kodi. That's
what I have done. It has had not a single problem with any of the
content that the MythTV frontend has been choking over. Not a single
one. Kodi (and mplayer) have both proven that the O/S, drivers, I/O
pipeline, BE, etc. are all fine. They both play everything from my
MythBE with not a single problem. It's just the MythFE that is having
a problem. Sherlock Holmes would deduce from that body of evidence
that the MythFE is the culprit.
