If it is the error I had, you'll have messages like after trying to get image metadata in the frontend you have messages about failed to write image file to a URL that contains an hostname or IP of backend that isn't your master backend. I'd look at your frontend log (or frontend output if you run mythfrontend from the command line) and see what messages you are getting when you try to download artwork. Even if this isn't the same issue as mine you'll get a better sense of what is going on.
