Yes, I was not clear that I was referring to logging in to the gui.

That might work with gnome, but does not with kde (which uses sddm) as 
the gui login.
There IS no 'Not listed?' option with sddm.

I presume that there is some magic incantation in /etc/pam.d/kde (the 
conf file). However the 'API' of the usage of this is entirely obfuscated.
