I also have a 650 but I can't say that it sucks the life out of batteries.
After a while the LCD turns off somewhat quicker than with a new set of
batteries but I change them perhaps once a year, or even 15-16 months.
Make sure you use decent-quality alkaline batteries, not cheapo chinese zinc
ones or rechargeables. Rechargeables will only give you 2.5v, not 3.0v.
