Look at AnyDVD.  That's how they can exist without getting sued out of
existence.  I can make a copy for personal use/backup.  As far as recording
with the HDPVR, I am not circumventing copy protection anyway.  There is no
copy protection on analog signals to circumvent.  Also, from the VCR high
court cases of the 80's I have a right to record TV for later playback for
personal use.  Put those two together and I have functionally circumvented
copy protection to record it, I'll give you that, but only because it's not
implemented on analog;  that fact does not make it illegal though.  YMMV,
IANAL.

Now if I give that copy to my brother to watch or keep then I've broken the
law.  That I fully admit.
