If you override the definition of the ChannelIcons SG (on the master
backend***), the directory/directories you specify are the only ones
used--by the code that actually uses the ChannelIcons SG. I don't know
the current status, but a while ago, only parts of the code actually
used the ChannelIcons SG and the rest of the code /required/ channel
icons to exist at ~/.mythtv/channels .

if you're willing to fix code that doesn't use the SG to convert it to
use the SG and you're willing to encounter breakage on your system
(rather than just having it work properly and not worrying), your best
bet is to put channel icons in ~/.mythtv/channels . And, if you're
worried about having multiple copies of your few megabytes of channel
icons on your multiple hosts, you can still have a single copy on the
network with symlinks and/or network file systems. (Meaning, IMHO,
there's no reason to ever override the ChannelIcons SG definition).

*** If you override the definition of the ChannelIcons (or any other) SG
on any non-master-backend host, the override applies only to that host
and the master backend (and all other) host(s) will use the built-in
(master-backend-defined) definition.
