     That's a lot of work to do with legacy files and you still don't have
any gaurantee it will work. Unfortunately, there's no version of myth where
both versions of this work correctly. That would be a good release to test
everything to make sure it all works as expected before moving on.

     My srts are only external because that's what MythTV supported before.

     I have the same problem as the OP.
