On a whim I upgraded to kernel 4.3 (which broke the NVidia binary blob driver)

The above 'aplay' no longer exits with an error, but there was no sound 
output either.

(since reverted to the 'current' kernel ~ 3.16)

Think I'm going to give up, and look for another sound card.
