Just a data point to add to this.

I'm using Nas4Free for shared storage and was only getting around 18 or 
so MBYTES using NSF.  Moving over to cifs I now average 60 MBYTES on the 
same equipment for writes and around 90 MBYTES for reads.  And, this is 
using Linux Mint; speeds are being reported by KDE.
