While I know that was true, do we know if that is still
true for the majority of the "usual suspects" for new
installations of current distros?  With the existing
ability to force a painter for the special cases (to
allow changing the default) it may be time to commit
a change to auto to master(*).

(*) Yes, there will be the edge cases, but those
trying to install MythTV on an old system with old
drivers should not drive the projects defaults.
