The deal with VHF is you can reach a similar area with much less power but the signal is more susceptible to interference from bouncing off buildings etc. I guess they have their eyes on the electric bill.

Mildly curious how they managed this as VHF-Lo, which is channels 2-6, is being repurposed for mobile.
