Neither of my boxes has nvidia hardware so I can't comment on that. 
Didn't think about it, but I suppose it would use the 'utopic' drivers. 
  I looked at Xorg.0.log after the HWE upgrade and it looks as if the 
intel driver package is newer than what I have at present on SL7.0; but 
the video hardware on both is old and relatively incapable (Q33 i915) 
and I use UPnP to drive the TV.

The 290e seemed troublefree with the stock 14.04 3.13 kernel, but it 
hasn't been my 'production' box.
