I remember a project to use lirc to move the mouse cursor around using 
the remote.  However, it will never be as good of an experience as using 
a device with Netflix built in.  The web interface is designed for using 
a mouse/keyboard, not a remote control.

You could buy a Roku Stick for $40, and get Netflix, as well as a ton of 
other streaming channels.  The $40 is a bargain compared to the huge 
time sink trying to get all those services to work with a web browser 
and remote even half as good as it does with the $40 stick.
