The painter setting implies you have broken openGL setup & (possibly)
VDPAU.

If you are using ION or other low powered h/w then could pay to check
read through the outputs of:
grep '(EE)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
vdpauinfo
