I think you're mixing up namings. ~ means the home directory so
~mythtv/.mythtv/channels is nonsense. If you're running as user mythtv
and its home directory is /home/mythtv it is fully:
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels
If the mythtv homedirectory is /var/lib/mythtv as I think in mythbuntu
it is: /var/lib/mythtv/.mythtv/channels
