To downgrade to 0.8.7 should certainly be a last option.  This would 
open a whole can of worms w r t the new kernel drivers and the old lirc 
ones. Eventually, you might be forced to use a "matching" kernel, a 
really old one :(

I see no reason why not 0.9.0 should work on CentOS. There seem to be a 
problem with the kernel decoding (?). However, so far we have nothing 
which shows any basic lirc problems besides configuration, which 
admittedly is a mess - even more so on 0.9.0 than later versions.
